Clogged sinks happen for a wide variety of reasons, from not enough detergent or water flow to a build up of gunk and debris. Regardless of the cause, you can fix the problem easily enough if you know what to do when your sink is clogged. You should always begin by making sure that the sink is free of all water. While you’re there, brush out any algae or food that might have gotten caught in the sink trap. If you see any floating objects, such as shells, remove them to prevent them from becoming lodged in the drain.
Next, take a plunger and fill the sink up about two inches from the top with water. This will allow water to flow freely through the sink, and any clogging materials will be drawn down into the sink. When you’re sure the sink is clear, grab a pair of wire kitchen gloves and loosen the sink trap with an effortless squeeze. When you let go of the trap, it will come off fairly easily, but it may be necessary to use pliers to take it completely out of the sink.
Finally, be sure to rinse the sink after you’ve taken out all the debris, food and traps. You may even want to wash some kitchen utensils before you flush to make sure they’re as clean as possible. When everything’s clear again, you can get started on your clogged sink problem and try to fix it. Hopefully, you’ll never have to tackle this situation, but knowing what to do when your sink is clogged will make it much less stressful.
